2022 Travel Log # 6 Texas pt. 3

So long, San Antonio. Hello small towns and unique communities! Have I ever told y'all just how much I love this guy?

One of the best parts of road trips is often what you see on the road. Getting off the interstate and seeing all the value of what progress leaves behind is part of the fun. We are now officially in what is considered the hill country of Texas. On the way to Luckenbach, we were able to roll over the hills and look out and see great beauty. However, because I am not traveling with a real camera (only phone shots this trip) it couldn't capture what our eyes could see.

Our first stop was Luchenbach, TX--the community created to escape the hustle and bustle of life and made infamous by a few musicians. It is off the beaten path for sure--you see this sign and it points out into a field--where you find the little community loop to walk through.

Look what we found!

And the natural progression of things, lol...

We liked this little slow paced community so much, we may have bought one of those blue signs and have it under all of stuff in the trunk.

Neat story about the post office--if you don't want to read all of it, read the last paragraph about the white line.

The white line in the post office.

The place was actually first bought and created by a circuit riding minister. It was later bought by Hondo Crouch and 2 others and they sought to create it to be a place to escape the world and take a step back into simpler times. Hondo is on the right and the one on the left is non-other than the famous singing troubadour that made Luckenbach famous, Jerry Jeff Walker.

All of the building are original. This wood burning stove is an original as well.

The back room of the post office--there are always 2 loaner guitars hanging for anyone-Johnny took advantage and played in the side room. Everyday from 1-5 they have an open pickers circle in that room.

Check out this massive tree!

A little field football.

After Luchenbach, the road took us to this place.

I learned that Johnny is proficient in German while we are here as he interprets all the meanings of the words (Willkommen=welcome).  Many of the towns here have German ties. He even calls things by their German word (many of which I am positive he makes up on the fly)!  Immediately when entering, we discover this place and decide to stop and explore!

Connecting to one side of this property was another learning opportunity at the Texas Ranger Heritage Center.

As we walked over to the Texas Ranger place, Johnny told me he was going to ask them about Walker (if you don't know--you are too young :). I laughed and said please make sure I am not standing near you if you do this. Well, you know he did it--when I was standing right beside him!

Imagine Johnny's smirk at me when we are reading these and the one on the upper right is entitled the "The Colt Walker Revolver." His chest puffed out a bit and a smirk slapped across his face as I was reading about Texas Ranger Walker (a real one).

1904 Patty wagon!

There happened to be an open gate to a path behind the Fort and Ranger Center. Since there were no signs warning us to keep out, we decided to take a walk that way as well.

The beauty that exists when we slow down to see it!

We finished up with the second half of the fort.

The Officer took a rest.

Just a little piece down the road, we see this really cool building, that happened to be an outfitter store and winery so we decided to take it in as well. They are still in the developing phase of other things that are going to be added--it is a cool place!

Another great find as we parked to walk the downtown:

The day of our visit, just happened to be on the anniversary of JFK's assassination.

JG's imagination was firing. When he was younger, this is exactly the find of play thing he would have wanted!

They also had an art exhibit detailing the war. Some of the depictions were incredible.

After this museum, we walked the town. Who knew--this downtown goes on and on--pretty incredible for such a small place. If you love a downtown shopping scene--this is your place. We don't enjoy the shopping, but love looking at the buildings and walking!

Once we finished exploring Fredericksburg, we drove over to Kerrville, TX for the night.
