2022 Travel Log #10 Guadalupe National Park

(This picture was taken at the grotto we hiked to on a trail in the park).

After leaving Big Bend National Park, our next destination was Guadalupe National Park. In between there, we stopped at Van Horn, TX. Here are a few sites from there.

Why in the world would this small town have a mural of Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin?? And just in case you don't know--Jeff B. is the Amazon founder. Odd stuff we thought.

UNTIL....we passed this out in the middle of nowhere! It is his missile testing/launch site for his space travel stuff. He chose the area because of its remote location and his memories of spending time at his grandfatther's southwestern TX ranch when he was a child. Because we turned around to snap a picture--I fully expected to be surrounded by black SUVs again...but it seems we were safe this time!

Due to the white rock clear water, blue sky and fall colors, this was one of the most colorful hikes we have taken so far!

We extended this a little more and hiked to a grotto and abandoned house, which made it 7 miles. It was a beautiful, very peaceful hike. The last few miles we met and chatted with a guy named Eric from Colorado. He was shocked when we said we would love to live in Buena Vista, Colorado. That is where he lives! He said it is the first time he has been away and someone actually know where it is. It was nice getting to connect with him.

This picture doesn't really show it well, but the bark on these types of trees are really red.

That sun was showing out again on this day!

Johnny started the rock completion.

Just for the record, John picked it up too, he just put it down sooner than I could snap!

A different rock, but he got one too!

Johnny's next feat, lol!

Look what we walked up on!

Up next, Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Carlsbad, NM.

  1. Y’all are making me tired seeing all those trails and lifting those rocks. That whitewashed house was interesting. And Eric . . . In your path for a reason. I hope he convinced y’all to stay put! These pictures make me want to go out west. Continue to have a great time! Love you and miss you!
