Career Quest #3 (Nettleton, MS)

This month, we visited some businesses in Nettleton. Our first stop, Bancorp South. We learned about the importance of saving for large purchases and some important things to be aware of if you plan on seeking a loan. The kids were mesmerized with the vault door! I liked that my mom, Jan Martin, was our tour guide!

I was not expecting the excitement when they gathered around the board table. They immediately called the meeting to order.

They got to try out the money counter.

Our last stop at the bank was the ATM machine. John and Aidan had an opportunity to try it out. John was too slow the first time and then entered he wanted $0.00. Obviously, he will need a little more practice. Aidan didn't have a problem!

Our next business visit was Homestretch, a furniture factory. We learned about values and behaviors that they believe have made the business successful. Some included treating others the way you want to be treated, safety, and good attitude. They also made a commitment to pay for and build a house for Habitat for Humanity every year. Their employees help construct the house on company time and the new residents are also given some furniture.

We were given a very detailed tour. We watched the entire process of a recliner being constructed. We began by watching the fabric being sorted and continued through the filling, frame construction, upholstery, and finished by seeing the completed process being packed for shipping. Wow-it was pretty impressive.

Our next stop was the Northern District Public Service Commissioner's office (Brandon Presley). We learned what the office of the Commissioner does in regards to regulating public services. Brandon shared the history of the office and why the regulation was needed.  John Gannon put in a plea for comparable internet service in rural areas. The answer was not encouraging :(, but hey, we will just keep hoping. We were grateful for the opportunity for the kids to meet him. We were not expecting him to be there.

Our visit was concluded by Thomas Adams explaining the investigative work that the office does. John Gannon thought it was cool there are investigators in other places than police stations. The staff also shared some of the weird requests people have called the office about.

Our last business stop in Nettleton was Rogers' NAPA Auto Parts. Mr. Don Rogers talked about the parts business and took us on a tour of the store.

He demonstrated the process of turning rotors.

He also demonstrated a machine that connects valves and hoses. All of the moms were thrilled with the fact that he shared such GREAT life lessons with the boys. He discussed the importance of keeping your word, integrity, and treating others with kindness and respect.

Again, we had another great day of memories and learning! Thank you to all of our teachers today.
